Physical activity is not only essential for healthy growth and development, it is also important to learning and getting good grades in school. Active kids are proven to get better grades, better sleep and have better attendance in school.
In the age of apps, tablets and streaming it can be difficult to keep these items out of your child’s hands and face without having a little scuffle about it. The sedentary lifestyle is increasing and so are child (and adult) health risks including obesity, diabetes and more. We want our kids to be happy, but we also want them to be healthy and a sedentary lifestyle doesn’t just impact their physical health, but their mental health as well.
Studies have proven the link between physical and mental health and their ability to perform in school. These studies are showing the link between physical activity and increased blood flow and how it helps the brain to perform. Beyond that, exercise is an important social component for mental health.
Even more so in these uncertain times, physical activity may help kids do better in school by improving their behavior, attention, memory and cognitive function.
Often kids get too little exercise during the school day, so parents really need to get onboard and provide these opportunities outside of school.
So what can you do about it?
Incorporate activities that make things fun! Walk or ride bikes to school with your child, create fun weekend activities that the whole family can get it in on, get involved with a team sport like martial arts, soccer or basketball. Eat an early dinner and go for a fun walk with the dog around the neighborhood.
There are many budget and time friendly options out there to increase your child’s physical activity during the day and after school. Help your child create enjoyable healthy habits early so they continue these habits throughout their whole lives!
